Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC)
TNSTC, formerly known as Pallavan Transport Corporation, was founded under the Companies Act of 1956. Initially, it included buses that served Chennai and Chengalpattu, and soon after, other State Transport Undertakings were established. The creation of 21 STUs through division took place between 1972 and 1996, with the merging of STUs commencing in 2001. Since 2004, these STUs have been operating as a combined and efficient unit of “Eight.”

MTC 1000 Rupees Bus Pass Rules in Chennai
Travel around Chennai with ease by availing the MTC 1000 Rupees Bus Pass. This pass allows you to travel in ordinary, express, deluxe, night service expects A, lift services, and chartered trips. It’s important to note that the pass is only valid for the period indicated on the card and must be signed by the passenger. Duplicate cards are not issued, so make sure to keep yours safe. Additionally, you are required to travel with the identity card issued by the MTC. With this pass, you can travel on any number of trips without any hassle. Please take note that a Stage is equivalent to approximately 2 kilometers in distance. Holders of M.S.T. are allowed to travel in Ordinary and Express buses. However, for Deluxe services, an additional amount of Rs. 11 will be collected. To obtain a Monthly Season Ticket, commuters must first obtain an Identity Card by paying Rs. 5 at the M.T.C Sales Counter. The cost for ID Card Lamination is Rs. 10, making the total cost Rs. 15. The Monthly Season Ticket will only be issued with the presence of this Identity Card. For those who want to get a new pass, one passport size photo and xerox copies of an address proof are required. Bus passes are valid from the 16th until the 15th of the following month. Lastly, students are entitled to a Free Bus Pass or a Concession.
Free MTC Pass Concession up to Higher Secondary School
Attention students from 1st to 12th Std, along with those studying in Government ITIs, colleges, and polytechnics! Listen up – you can now avail a free bus pass to commute between your residence and educational institutions. This offer is applicable on all days of the month, and allows you to travel on all Ordinary, Express, and Deluxe services except Night Services and AC.
To obtain this pass, school authorities must get the application forms from MTC’s Head Office. After filling out the form, MTC’s pass-issuing agencies will visit your school for taking photos and issuing passes through the online system. The passes, once laminated, will be given to you at your school.
The period for issuing these passes is from June 15th to November 30th every year. The validity period for the pass is from June 15th to April 30th. Take advantage of this opportunity and travel safely to your educational institutions!
Procedures for Getting MTC Tickets
To obtain a student concession ticket, individuals must adhere to certain procedures. At the start of every academic year, 50% student concession application forms can be obtained through educational institutions. This process involves registration and the issuance of point-to-point cards for the first month. After this period, students can collect the point-to-point card directly from the M.T.C. sales counter. It is important to note that renewal dates are specified on the student’s ID card and must be followed accordingly.
Student concession tickets are issued from the 1st to the 13th of every month, and each pass is valid from the 11th of the current month to the 10th of the following month. It is crucial that students who lose their ID cards or change their address contact the concession pass in charge at their college for assistance.

Individuals with physical disabilities or mental retardation are eligible for a complimentary travel concession. The disability must exceed 40% and be recommended by a District Rehabilitation Officer. The pass allows for travel from residence to educational institutions, work, or hospitals within 30 km. One attendant is permitted to travel with the mentally challenged person. An original MTC bus pass must be produced while travelling and checking.
A separate bus pass concession is available for visually impaired individuals, which does not have any restrictions on income, travel distance, or the number of trips per month. The eligibility criteria for this pass is the same as the one mentioned above.
Freedom fighters, language stir participants, aged Tamil scholars, and Tamil award winners can also avail of a bus pass concession. This requires the submission of certificates proving financial assistance or freedom fighter pension offered by a state or central government. Individuals who hold this pass can travel on all routes and STU buses.
Senior citizens living within the Chennai City limit can obtain a free bus pass if they are 60 years of age or older. The senior citizen token can only be obtained from the nearby depot or terminus, and proof of address and age must be provided through Ration Card and Aadhar Card, respectively.
