What is called Pradosham?

Pradosham is a bimonthly event that occurs on the thirteenth day of each lunar fortnight, in Hinduism. It falls on the sighara sashti day and coincides with the waning phase of moon or amavasya. People perform poojas to Lord Shiva during Pradosham, as it is believed that He graces devotees who observe fasts on this day. The duration between sunset and midnight during pradosham is said to be highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva. Devotees bathe before worshiping Him with sacred ash, rudraksha mala or beads and flowers.

What should I offer to Lord Shiva on Pradosham?

The most appropriate offering to Lord Shiva on Pradosham is milk. Generally, devotees offer a Trishul shaped Abhishekam or pour an abhishekam of milk over the linga three times with a spoon in clockwise direction. You may also include butter and honey as added ingredients for your puja. Additionally, you can chant mantras like ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ and ‘Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhan’ during your puja which will be beneficial for you spiritually.

What is called Maha Shivratri?

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated in honor of the god Shiva. It occurs on the 13th night and 14th day of the Hindu month Phalgun (February-March), which is also known as maha shivratri. This is an important event that marks the convergence of Krishna Paksha (waning moon) and Shukla Paksha (the waxing moon). The festival starts from morning prayers, singing hymns, chanting mantras and offering food to Lord Shiva. Various religious rituals are performed on this auspicious occasion such as Shiva Abhishekam or bathing with water along with milk, yogurt and honey. Devotees observe fast throughout the day until midnight when devotees offer special pooja or prayer ceremony to seek blessings from Lord Shiva for spiritual progress, material well-being and peace for their loved ones.

What should I offer to Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri?

You can offer a variety of items to Lord Shiva on mahashivratri such as flowers, milk, Shivling (Shiva idol), Bael leaves, fruits and water. It is also common practice to chant mantras while offering the items. You may even offer sweets such as ladoos or prasadam that you would have prepared earlier at home. If possible performing a havan or yagna with special ingredients is recommended for extra blessings from the Lord. Another way of worshipping him could be through an arti where special prayers are accompanied with oil lamp lighting and music drums playing.
