Why Guru Purnima Is Important
Guru Purnima is important spiritually because it is the day Ved Vyasa was born. Ved Vyasa was a well-known sage who edited the Vedas and split them into four parts. He also wrote the Mahabharata and the Puranas, which are called the “fifth Veda.” On this day, your prayers go straight to the Mahaguru, and his blessings keep darkness and ignorance out of your life. Buddhism says that after Gautam Buddha moved from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, he gave his first sermon or lesson to his first five disciples. The “Sangha,” is the group of his followers.
In Jainism, this is the day Lord Mahavira became his first disciple Gautam Swami’s “Guru,” and the day is known as Mahavira Day. Also, this day is very important to farmers. They worship God and ask for enough rain for the next harvest season on this day. This day, called “Diksha,” is when many people start their spiritual lessons. Also, many people who study Indian classical music honor their music “gurus.” And then, the guru-shishya parampara will happen again (teacher-student tradition).
