The latest report on road accidents in Tamil Nadu indicates that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), through its Transport Research Wing (TRW), collects data on road accidents annually from the Police Departments of States/Union Territories. This data is subsequently published in the Ministry’s ‘Road Accidents in India’ annual publication. It is important to note that while TRW, MoRTH does not specifically gather information on road accidents involving electric vehicles, it does report on the total number of road accidents, fatalities, and injuries categorized by types of vehicles involved for the calendar year 2022.
In 2022, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents, with 15,054 out of the total 77,004 road accidents in the Pedestrian category. Additionally, 4,427 individuals lost their lives in road accidents in Tamil Nadu during the year 2022. The breakdown of road accidents by vehicle type in Tamil Nadu for 2022 is as follows: Bicycle – 1,766 accidents, Two-Wheelers – 39,676 accidents, Auto Rickshaw – 1,279 accidents, LMV – 3,963 accidents, Trucks & Lorries – 1,065 accidents, and Buses – 1,188 accidents.
