CSD Unit Run Canteen (URC) Function, Beneficiaries, Organization Structure
Since its inception in 1948, the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) has been dedicated to serving the Defence Services. Starting with just four Depots and a turnover of less than Rs 48 lakhs, it has now expanded to 34 Area Depots and achieved a turnover of Rs 17,000 crores in 2016-17. The client base has grown steadily from a few thousand British soldiers in 1942 to over four million Services households today, with nearly 90% of the clients comprising JCOs, other ranks, and their families.
The CSD provides quality daily-use products at rates lower than those prevailing in the market to Armed forces personnel, Defence civilians, ex-servicemen, and their families across the country. The Department does not have direct contact with its customers, only Managers/In-Charges (I/Cs) of Unit-Run-Canteens (URCs), who represent the needs of their clientele while demanding items from the Depots. Thus, these Managers/I/Cs must be aware of their customers’ needs. The Department continues to be scrutinized daily by its customers for product availability, rates, and range.
The CSD functions under the Ministry of Defence and is managed by Defence civilian officers and a few serving officers on deputation from Armed forces. The remaining workforce comprises Civilian Central Government Employees. Presently, the CSD offers a wide range of consumer items, including Against-Firm-Demand items, totaling approximately 5735 products.
Feedback to CSD Canteen
The Canteen Stores Department has implemented a new way for customers to register feeback about any Unit Run Canteen. As per their official portal, customers can now directly email their grievances to the following email addresses:

This initiative is expected to make the complaint registration process more convenient and hassle-free for customers.

I JC-767046F Subedar Honorary Lieutenant Bisht Jagdish Chandra Singh Khark Singh retired from Army EME on 28 February 2017 applied for Canteen Smart Card from Statiy Workshop EME, Vadodara. Grocery Joint Card For Self and Wife received but for my sons till date not received. My son name Devendra Singh Bisht Date of Birth is 28 September 2004. I have physically approached two to three times but they replied That your Son Canteen Smart Card not received by them. Please look into the matter and early reply.
I Rajkishor working in dmsrde Kanpur I was perchaged groceries items on date 22/07/2018 bill no 024830 from cod canteen Kanpur.I was choose 02 nos bottles Fanta coldrinks in my basket. But COD canteen warkar force fully removed from my basket with this comment. This is only for COD personal. Same time so many people taken from parallel counter after that I have been meet canteen Manager and requested him but unfortunately he had also conducted missbehave with me.he had not justify.. I hope that you justify it and take necessary actions against unsystematic behaviour fallows. Thanks.
One defence personal can serve in defence from age 17 up to 57 yr .means 40 yrs . After buying car in 10th year he should be allowed to buy car after 10 yrs in service 2nd time …. why in services only one .. how can one car can go up to 30 yrs .. or like one as Other rank and another car after getting JCO rank .means in service of 40 yrs can buy 2 car ???
